The "Is It Bad" thread got me thinking about John Ward calls and I think they deserve their own thread. Many of Ward's calls have the spine tingling quality but my two favorite calls from Ward both come from the 86 Sugar Bowl. One is his call and summary of Jeff Powell's gallant TD run. "Powell just comes ROARING down the emerald floor of the Superdome." The other is his call of Chris White's interception.
All the calls are favorites. I am in my mid 50's and as I grew up not many game were on TV and saw very few in person. John Ward was UT football to me. Even after more games were on TV, they were not the same without his announcing. Nothing can bring me chill bumps quicker than a bit of John Ward doing football or basketball.
The best part of that call is when he says: Willie Gault ladies and gentlemen is running all the way to the state capitol. Willie Gault!
"Broken up, was that intercepted in mid air? Ladies and gentleman what a play by Dales Dones. He was two feet away from Mike Shula..."
I love it before the team would run through the T and he would say "Whereever you are listening ladies and gentlemen, it's football time in Tennessee.
