I just stood there and laughed after it was completed. As soon as he caught it I knew was was going to happen. It was all of our 4 and 5 year olds on base too. We had no chance. Last game tonight. It's been as much fun coaching as I've ever had, and the boy has exceeded by expectations 1000 times over for his first time.
I'm sure you already know this and are aware but it warrants mentioning anyway ... be careful with him as he begins to progress. I really fault myself for ruining my son's love for the game because I was so demanding of his time and attention to the game. I never did anything overboard to hurt him physically but I certainly take fault for his "okay, I'm done" attitude later on. I learned so much about what not to do through my experiences with him and it has helped me advance my daughter's ability infinitely better ... both mechanically and mentally. If I may, I want to leave you with a note that I gave all of my parents on the travel team I coach. Like I said, you sound like you've got it figured out ... but it was worth mentioning I thought.
I appreciate any and every reminder. Trust me. It's going to be tough, I can already tell you. He's only 4, but you can already tell he's got an inner knack for what to do, especially hitting. He's got a pretty swing, and when he's focused can hit it hard. I pretty much have two rules other than to have fun. 1. Try your best. 2. Listen to the coaches. Do those two things, and I'll never say a word otherwise. Tuesday.............we had to have a little talk on the way home about both.
Benches cleared once. Almost twice. Was the cockiest bunch I had ever faced. Never faced one that cocky after.
Played our last game last night. The boy got to play 2nd for an inning. He did fine although I was terrified. Good season all in all. He did better than I ever expected. No complaints. He told me he would miss his team and was ready to play in the spring. Mission accomplished.
I understand the Dodger hate some have, old rivalries, Puig, bubble machines, 238 million payroll but Kershaw is a damn good dude as a player and a human. He's not one of the reasons.
