God I love Bill Snyder. Best endorsement ever came from Bo when contacted by KSU and was asked about them possibly hiring Snyder as HC. "Get him the **** outta this conference."
At first glance makes one scratch their head but going by their factors --- Asst's pay, facilities & recruiting would give the adv to Jones. Track record: Overall wins & winning % goes to Bielema, slight edge to Jones in the number of HC gigs and their success. I didn't see it mentioned but developing talent / number of players at the next level should be a factor as well.
I heard that, great story. Another, iirc, didn't he offer to come out of pocket for like $100K to improve KSU facilities?
An arguement can be made for present day achievements but in consideration of the overall give me Snyder
Overachieving? That comment in and of itself is "nuts" --- the games greatest minds would agree. Everywhere* he's gone he's left the program in much better shape (*including KSU's drop-off circa 2004). Program = Synder Coaching = Synder Conf Champs = Push Recruiting = Synder Personnel / player conduct = Synder Awards & Peer recognition = Synder
Program, no Conf champs, no on % basis Recruiting isn't close. Malzahn is 40 times better. Player conduct, who cares Awards? Which ones? Malzahn always loses because of his no-traditional route. Everywhere Malzahn has been, he won and they got much better. He essentially coached the national title team at Auburn and took a weak AU to another title game. Completely changed Tulsa and Arky state to the good.
I mean Snyder gets some credit because as a whole because he's accomplished much more. But if I can have Snyder in his prime I'm still taking Gus.
Longevity at a backwater program means squat to me. I'm not hiring the guy to try to win big games. I'd take Malzahn all day long.
Program = Yes. Case in point KSU. Before Snyder it was considered a coaches graveyard or black hole. The four previous HC's never coached again. Conf Champs = Both have won 2, Synder won 6 division champs to Mazahn's 2. Malzahn does have a NC appearance Recruiting = No. Malzahn due to many factors gets the "star" power but there is no question Synder has done far more with far less talent. Player conduct = Seems to be all the rage these days. Ever hear a peep 'bout Snyder's players? Awards: To start COY three times ('98, '11, & '12) to Malzahn's one ('13)
