As a national sportswriter said a while back about UGA - "All but about 5 coaches would crawl over broken glass to take that job." Smart may be a home run, but Saban disciples are batting at about a 50% success rate right now. They could have made a hire that concerned me more, a lot more actually.
IMO, Smart could be a bust or he could make UGA the power it should be. It's gonna come down to how good of an offensive staff he can put together.
They definitely could have made a better hire. The two Georgia fans that I know are pissed about the hire. They wanted them to swing for the fences first, and then if they strike out, go get Smart. He wouldn't have been taking any other job until UGA was filled.
I'm sure he's better than Sunseri. Saban has kept him around from LSU to Miami to Bama. He's at least competent as an assistant.
For crying out loud, Dooley was with him from LSU through Miami and was going to be with him at Bama until he wanted the Tech job.
Muschamp was the promised one as well, right up until he got the reins somewhere. And Auburn's defense was nothing special this year.
Saban kept Dooley around from LSU to Miami and thought highly of him. Honestly, it seems to be the longer guys have stayed on the worse they've done. Fisher got out early.
