In 2012, he set foot on campus to find an offensive coordinator and an offensive line coach begging for continued employment. Although contracted with relatively modest salaries at the time, the pair would ultimately become the nation’s highest paid coaches at their respective positions. He dismissed them immediately and replaced the OC with a guy that’s been a career position coach since and the OL coach with a guy that went back to high school after leaving Tennessee.
Damn. I didn't even think about that until you brought that up. I remember Chaney and Pittman both stating they wanted to remain in Knoxville. Then Butch with his GSIA blew that all to hell. He is still pissing me off after a year.
And that same HC was fired and became an intern. I'm sensing a pattern of incompetency in the referenced former HC.
My dad always told me to hire your weaknesses. Butch would have needed to hire someone to be HC in his case.
Had Jones stepped his enormous ego aside and retained Chaney/Pittman... UT would likely have Amari Rodgers, Tee Higgins, Trevor Lawrence and Cade Mays on roster right now. And his dumbass would still be employed so take that for what it's worth.
He could have easily been another Dabo...CEO type. Let your assistants do the coaching while you go out and bring in the recruits. It really could have worked. But...
Butch Jones came in and claimed to have the best staff in America and an infallible system. Mouth breathers fell for it.
