Could Gingrich beat Obama? Gingrich tied with Romney in national poll, Cain leads

It is such a fluid situation anyway, it is silly to focus too much on snapshots of the present. The emergence of a republican nominee will have a way of galvanizing and consolidating the population into two camps, that right now might be flirting with decisions they would never really make.

    Very good point.

I think cities can be just as insular and one-minded. I thought I was going to get killed doing campaign work in S. Philadelphia in 2004. And that's not a slight to Philly, a city I love. It's that politics bring out views that are heated, and yes, one-sided, no matter where you live.

Also, if memory serves me, Wisconsin is a unique place politically. Agrarian socialism was popular there, and I believe Eugene Debs is from Wisconsin.

    Debs was from Indiana. Sorry.

Agrarian socialism had a few outposts in Tennessee at one time.

You are correct. There still is a commune or two in the state.

Yes, but you still have a mix between the 'burbs and the city proper. Certainly, on an individual basis, Knoxville isn't completely devoid of well-informed and objective individuals, but the statistical and anecdotal data shows a very insular city throughout that eschews critical thinking in favor of inflexible platitudes. I go to my small town in Wisconsin throwing around my liberal politics and I get debated. In Knoxville, I get treated like a leper. It's just a place incredibly hostile to outside thinking, although, certainly, not the only place of its kind within this country.

But, yes, Wisconsin is very unique in its politics and swings either way in elections. Debs also gained his notoriety in Wisconsin and you can see the effects of that socialist mindset in Milwaukee with its politics and, most interestingly, within the city landscape with things like the socialist belief in green space. There are parks everywhere.

Depends where you go in Knoxville.

Knoxville just elected a female, Democrat mayor by the way.

I would like to see what the statistical measures are that analyze "insularity" and addresses critical thinking. Additionally, I wonder if these studies have controlled for natives, or people who have moved from elsewhere to Knoxville? Does it break down the neighborhoods of Knoxville... is Gibbs like Farragut? I would be interested to see those studies if you have them or could link them.

Additionally, I think Knoxville is politically interesting given that Republicans have dominated that area since before the Civil War, and because of its status as Union territory did not have a hard-core Southern Democrat presence in the area. That is unique to most of the South and has produced a type of Republican different than seen in the Old South, like the Duncans and Haslams. (My grandfather was a ward captain for George Wallace in 1968 in East Tennessee and had a pretty difficult time rallying support to his cause. The Middle and West of the state are a different story).

When I post it I am casting a wide net and have been deluded by right wing media. When you post it is based on objective, non-biased reading of the facts. I'll remember that.

Here's where I'm getting my wide net fodder. 1. Obama approval ratings continue in the low-mid 40s. I believe the most recent Gallup (those vile right wingers) had an approval rate at 44% or so. 2. When you look into the ratings you see that among I's they are at or below the national average. 3. When you look demographically you see major loss of support among white voters. It is strong with AAs and fairly strong with Hispanic/Latino voters. 4. His approval ratings on the economy are even worse - in the 30s. The election will primarily be about the economy. 5. Economic projections both growth and unemployment in particular are grim going forward with UE expected to remain at or very near 9%. 6. He is behind in key states, NC/VA/FL/OH. VA is close for him but he's in trouble in other states he must win.

In his favor is that he has a ton of money. Romney is a safe haven for disaffected Obama voters of which there are many.

Or maybe I'm just blinded by right-wing media and insularity.

It's your superior attitude that likely leads to you being treated like a leper. Throughout this thread you've told us how open-minded you are and how dumb, misinformed and close-minded everyone else is.

LOL at describing parks as socialist belief in greenspace.

Read the language of your first post in the thread. I don't see why you'd be surprised at a hostile reaction if that's your standard approach.

  14. The main saboteur of Obama's administration is Obama. Unqualified, incompetent, arrogant, racist, narcissistic, and the list goes on.

You can't possibly present any valid argument that he has been competent, much less a good or effective POTUS.
