I can remember watching games with the tv muted and listening to John. He was UT football for me and so many others.
Gotta love how he referred to the famous duo as "Reginald Cobb" and "Charles Webb." For realz though, I get goosebumps reading everyone's accounts.
It was a basketball call that holds mine. Against Kentucky in 75 or 76, Rick Robey of Kentucky ran out of bounds and jumped over the table where John was. John made this quote,"Rick Robey, 6-10,245, John Ward,5-10,145,maybe!"
Yep. It plays constantly in my car. My 2 year old always tells me to play rockytop when I buckle her in.
I think he was great at both. I think he did a remarkable job in basketball games. I loved his standard "Walked, didn't call it!" And it was late free throws by Allan Houston at Memphis that prompted "M-O-N-E-Y! MONEY, put it in the bank, ALLAN HOUSTON!" In football, I was working that Saturday listening to a game on the radio at lunch. One certain Dude with a 'Tude was playing his first game on both Offense and Defense. I remember the interception and obligatory countdown as some Vol picked off a pass and ran it back for a TD. John said "Who else? CARL PICKENS!" He had a knack for saying that name.
John Ward was perfect for bringing that game experience into the homes when there were only 3 network channels. Had we had Bob Kessling during that same timeframe, I'd wait to see the results in the Sunday paper.
