None of the literary classics are confused with suspense novels. But the story is good. Guy builds an entire life around getting one woman he loves who he thinks is too good for him. Said woman turns out to be a selfish, entitled piece of crap. Her MO is livin carelessly and running over anyone (literally and figuratively) that gets near her but doesn't give a damn. Turns out he is too good for her, but he can't realize it. She can't bring herself to leave her life to be with him and his life (literally and figuratively) ends.
I don't really understand that. Sex, greed, adultery corruption, success and failure are crammed into what, 180 pages? There are gangsters, gambling, murders, and a guy with a mysterious past who throws lavish parties to meet a girl. Modernism isn't for everyone, but the book has a lot, and Fitzgerald tells it in the ultimate evolution of his style. It's a period piece that transcends the period. It is the best American novel ever written.
Best. I can think of only 2 real rivals, and I just don't like Huck Finn that much. If you want to pick BTW Gatsby and Moby [penis] it is a pointless debate as both answers are right.
My junior year in high school I drew the task of reading moby [penis] for a book report. It's been 17 years and I still don't want to touch that book again.
Hemingway had turds that were more interesting. Death in the afternoon was better and that's non fiction. Sun also rises stands the test of time. Anything that has to have the "well that's was a sign of that time" disclaimer isn't a great piece of work IMO
