Another bit of sunshine of the “expectations are so low that it’s not hard to be a pleasant surprise” category...

The Athletic posted final Stop Rate rankings from last year, and...whew it’s bad. So Stop Rate is a fancy stat that isn’t especially fancy. Meant to replace yards/points allowed in an uptempo game, it asks: in what percentage of your opponents’ drives did you force a punt, turnover, or turnover on downs.

Last year we were 99th in the country with a stop rate of 56%. Granted, we did have a tougher than average schedule, but that still put us just 10th in the SEC, ahead of Missouri by a tenth of a percent, plus South Carolina, Vandy, and Ole Miss (all between 50% and 53%). Conference leaders were Georgia and Alabama in the low 70s.

It’s been documented ad nauseum how bad the offense was, and how little competence it’d take to improve. Well, apply that to the defense as well. (We’ll probably need to actually retain some players though)
