I think reality is that whenever this conflict ends, if any part of Ukraine is free it will be in NATO almost instantly. But doing it while there is a conflict sort of creates a scenario the treaty didn't account for and Russia hasn't accounted for. And you don't want those kind of not-contemplated scenarios to come about when there are nukes involved.

Ukraine can’t join while in an active war.

Ukraine is also going to lose, so Russia is going to get to dictate the terms of the war ending and I don’t see that allowing the western side of the country that will be left to be in NATO.

Well we will have to watch Russia kill them all, because they won't live under that yoke again.

Russias terms will be getting to keep stolen land. The last time they promised not to invade as part of a treaty, they did. Twice.

Ukraine is going to get protection at some point for whatever is left of their country. And they’ll try to get support in a way that will attempt to minimize relying on republican promises. NATO membership would fit that bill.

I figure Russia will take the eastern territory for sure. Then they’ll have a neutral territory in the middle and then western territory of the new Ukraine with their own government.

I feel like that means we are headed for a nuclear war at some point with Russia.

It's a possibility. We have been doing the Nuke dance with Russia as long as I can remember. And I'm old. I will admit that Putin worries more than the others.

According to this, Ukraine joining NATO has been discussed since 2008.

My take-away is the recent comment made by the NATO dude is nothing new.

Blinkin is saying that at some point China had to talk putin out of using nukes in Ukraine. This is why the hand wringing about escalation is to me a losing mindset. He has all options on the table, so should we. Yes, it could lead to MAD. Why pretend that isn't already the world and has been? The stakes were never lower than that when it comes to Putin and Russia.

That being said, putin needs an exit ramp. Not sure what that looks like, but for this to end he needs a way to spin it as a win.

Our willingness to accept Putin having an exit ramp seems far less important than what it would be.

Russia has been boldly attacking the last few days and to his credit, Trump is getting pissed about it. He may be seeing the dynamics of this conflict a little differently

So I'm guessing he will trot out the go-to tariff threat? I'm just guessing.

I saw a little blurb about it yesterday and meant to dive deeper into it but alas life got in the way.

We haven't done much more in the past so that's probably the direction.

I think, not sure, our Russian imports have dropped from ~$20B to around $3B. Assuming that is a result of past "sanctions"?
