Comcast is just mercilessly mercilessly sodomizing me

They've really got my balls in a sling.

So I guess whenever I got their service, it must have been some deal where the rate got jacked up significantly after six months. I got some deal prior to CFB season that gave me ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN Classic...and even tennis channel. I think I even have HBO as well -- actually...I'm sure I do -- but I never watch it. In fact, now that college football is over, I don't watch TV at all. I'll keep tennis channel on in the background, but I could certainly live without it. At the time, the deal was decent, it was like 90 bucks for everything but the extra sports channels, and I wanted to have ESPNU and Classic, and it was only 10 bucks extra a month for them to throw in those and others (tennis channel, big ten network, etc.), so I told them to go ahead and do it. So I had crazy fast cable internet and the above-described cable setup for what came out to a little over 100 bucks a month.

And then I notice either last month or two months ago, that they raised that [itch bay] on up to $175. And I don't even watch TV, so obviously I didn't really think this was an awesome deal, so I call them up and try the ole "fake cancellation of service" trick to see what kind of offers they can give me. Well they either (1) knew I was bluffing, or (2) just didn't have any decent offers to hand out, because the [itch bay] comes back and is talking some nonsense about lowering my bill ten bucks a month. And I told her that if I wanted to save ten bucks a month, I'd simply stop getting weekly handjobs from her mother.

I then said, fock it, let me just cancel cable completely. Just give me cable internet.

    "Okay, that'll be $90 a month"
"Are you making a focking joke?"
"No sir, that's the rate for the high speed internet service"
"But it says here on the website that I can get high speed internet service and cable for $60 a month"
"Well sir, yes, but that's a new promotion for new customers"
"Well okay, then I'm just gonna cancel the service, and then get new service"
"No sir, your service has to be discontinued for two months before you can be considered a new customer"
KidB's feelings at this point in the conversation are nicely illustrated by Walter in the scene at the very bottom of the post.

So here's the deal, I can't get FIOS. There are high rises directly to the East, North, and West of me, and they can all get FIOS. My place is a townhouse, that's not a high rise only because the land they built the townhomes on is probably a little too small for a high rise, and so it's just a tiny little pocket of non-concrete-jungle in the middle of a certifiable concrete jungle*. Bottom line: I can't get FIOS.

I also can't get Directv, because there's no good place to mount the dish, but I don't even care about that. All I want is high speed internet. And, no, I'm not messing with DSL. Once you go Cable, DSL is just a non-starter.

So what can The Kid do? I'm not paying $90 bucks a month for internet alone. That's just principle. I'm obviously not going to continue to pay $175 for cable I don't watch.

The only thing I can think of is to maybe cancel my service, and then pick up one of their starter deals by doing it in somebody else's name. The problem there, is that none of my friends are gonna wanna mess with that, my dad might be anti-establishment enough, but he's got the same last name as me. I feel like Comcast may figure out my gambit if I try to go that route.

Any other suggestions? Comcast shouldn't be able to gouge people simply because the Supreme Court sucks at antitrust law and gave cable companies the right to legally negotiate geographic monopolies, and because KidB can't get FIOS.

I have Time Warner, and they've been raising me ten bucks every six months or so for about three years. I fear for my life when Comcast gets ahold of them

I ditched cable because I got pissed at their constant up-up-upping of the prices.

Do you have access to DSL where you live?

I'm in the same boat with Comcast. I don't watch TV either except sports, and there's enough things I gotta watch that I just can't bring myself to ax it, plus I gotta have internet and I figured they'd really gouge me on just that. I really wanted to switch to Direct, but my apt isn't situated so that I could get a dish pointed the right way.

Yes. It's just that DSL is way slower than cable. It's been a while since I've used DSL, but I feel like the difference would be both noticeable and annoying.

I'm currently on my last straw with DirecTV. If they don't get SEC Network, I am gone.

That's what I was doing for all of 2013 until I got service in August. It's a last resort, but the signal was spotty when i was doing it before. Actually...that gives me an interesting idea. .I've never tried a wifi antenna before, but that might make a big difference.

Any of y'all ever gone that route?

I've had DirecTV for 5 years and they've been great but I have to have the SEC network.

I've just notice that they seem to have programming issues with people more than anyone else, my bill raises for no reason, they keep trying to pawn crap channels on me, I miss my Weather Channel (esp with tornado season around the corner), and the SEC Network will be the final nail in the coffin

My bill has never risen. I don't know if I'm lucky or what, but it's still the same price I signed up for.

I think it's random. I don't know. And it's not a ton, just a few bucks here or there, nothing major.
