Who will be our Saban?

For anyone that didn't already know, there are a lot of similarities between what Tennessee is going through now and what Alabama was recently going through. Fulmer's last four years seem remarkably similar to Dubose's four years at Alabama, Kiffin's tenure in Knoxville and his quick exit resemble that of Franchione at Alabama, and there are a surprising amount of similarities between Dooley and Shula, from the circumstances in which they were hired to their record through two years.

Alabama was able to recover by hiring an elite coach. My question is, why can't Tennessee?

I'm no saying UT should expect to get someone on the level of Saban, or that Tennessee has to hire someone of that caliber to be successful. I'm simply wondering what advantage did Alabama have that Tennessee won't have? They got lucky to get Saban in particular, but I see no reason why Tennessee can't hire someone that would instantly inspire confidence among the fan base.

    Any thoughts?

More important to have a cultural fit and a guy pretending to give two shits about UT and our traditions than a winner.

I'm getting awfully close to robbing a Las Vegas casino vault. I'll be needing ten posters to help me out.

From the Miami Dolphins perspective, I guess you could say Kiffin was our Saban.

I think an opportunity was missed with Kevin Sumlin. He'll do well at A&M , especially now that they can sell the SEC to go along with being in Texas. Hell, UT will probably hire James Franklin in a couple of years away from Vandy.

    That will never happen.

At this point, I don't want it to either but there is already so much hype around this guy for winning 6 games. Sporting News put him in their top 5 coaches on the rise. If Vandy continues to improve from what they usually are than he'll be a hot name for a better job. I don't really like the guy but I guess the same could have been said about Kiffin from rival fans too.

Jon Gruden would make a good Saban. Never hurts to ask. Repeatedly.

  13. Why shouldn't we expect that caliber of a coach?

I agree 100%. If he gets canned next year I say we go for it.

There aren't many of those guys around. Alabama got incredibly lucky to get Saban, too. Not many coaches will leave the NFL in Miami for college in Tuscaloosa.

I endorse this post. I know it's a pipe dream, but I can hope.

I don't know who it will actually be, but I wish they'd hurry up and get here. More years like the last few, and I'll be suicidal.

I think he saw the writing on the wall. He went 6-10 in 2006 and would have been coaching for his job in 2007...and that team went on to finish 1-15. He would've been back in the college ranks, so he just capitalized on the Bama opening while it was available.
