For whatever reason, I had never gotten into Westerns. Always thought Tombstone was great, of course, but really haven't even watched that many others. Last year, though, I started watching Lonesome Dove when it came on AMC. Six hours later I got off the couch. I was hooked. Watched Unforgiven yesterday and loved it. So give me some others. What are some 'must see' Westerns?
A fistful of dollars Fow few more dollars The good, the bad, and the ugly. Two mules for sister Sara High plains drifter The outlaw Josey Wales- One of my favorite movies of all time
Josie Wales The Searchers Liberty Valance Fistful Of Dollars My Darling CLementine Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (Lonesome Dove is my favorite followed by the Searchers)
Good, Bad, ugly has a ton of those insanely long pauses with wildly crescendoing music. It works, though.
Josey Wales Pale Rider The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly Lonesome Dove Joe Kidd Rio Lobo Rio Bravo El Dorado
If you have three hours to kill and don't mind paying realllly close attention, The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford is excellent.
Both True Grits are good, each with a different feel about them. I thought Casey Affleck did a great job as Robert Ford, but was underwhelmed by Brad Pitt playing Jesse James. Definitely worth a watch though if you have the time.
High Noon hasn't been mentioned, but if you like classics, it is the definition. So is Stagecoach. Almost all of the John Wayne's and Clint Eastwoods are good, if somewhat formulaic. Silverado is another good choice. And i thought Centennial was better than Lonesome Dove if you are looking for another mini. FWIW, I never really liked Unforgiven, and I thought the new 3:10 to Yuma was turble.
Since we are talking about Westerns, Deadwood anyone? Timothy Olyphant and Ian McShane? All-time television right there.
I was glad to see that Cotton mentioned Silverado. It gets forgotten in a lot of these discussions. I would also recommend McClintock and The Sons of Katie Elder. Last year there was a really quirky movie called The Warrior's Way. Didn't see much box office play, but it was a martial arts meets Pale Rider. I really enjoyed it for something different.
