Today is Vesak, or Buddha Day. According to legend, the Buddha was born, became enlightened and died on the same day of the year, the first full moon of May.

Much like other religions, Vesak (pronounced "way-sak") is celebrated on different days in the different traditions and countries. Some have taken to a firm date in May, some still use the old lunar calendars and Vesak can be in May or June, depending on how the moons land that year.

I won't bore you with the legends and stories of the Buddha (unless someone asks, then I would be happy to do it), but like in Christianity, his birth has a lot of miracles and devas (angels) coming down and wise men showing up, and all other sorts of weirdness. He battles Mara during the night of his enlightenment and his death is his last death, having broken free of samsara (cyclic existence).

Are all these miracles and stories true? I doubt it. But it doesn't really matter, especially if it brings you some happiness and helps you along the way down the Dharma path.

Metta (loving-kindness) to all, and may you find happiness and peace in your life.

First Noble Truth: Life is full of dukkha (often translated as suffering, but more akin to dissatisfaction). And brother, do vol fans suffer.

"Happy Holidays" is what the terrorists and apostates say.

This Buddhist holiday will henceforth be known as "Spring Christmas" on the 8th.

    True Story*:

Someone traveling in the East heard the phrase "dookie happens" meaning "suffering is there" and mistranslated it to "shit happens". Made a million bucks.

*meaning I completely made it up

    Happy Holidays!

Today is vesak and may all beings in existence be happy and well and may they know the causes of their suffering and know the end of their suffering.

Buddhist monk goes up to a hot dog vendor and says "make me one with everything."

    I'll be here all week.

Is Vesak like a Free Will Baptist, or an Independent Baptist Church, thing?

I only understand religion as it directly correlates to Southern Baptists.
