    Beastie Boy Passes Away

Adam Yauch (a.k.a. MCA) of the Beastie Boys dies today from cancer. Completely bummed. The Beastie Boys are, and have been since the 80s, my favorite music group. I remember listening to "Brass Monkey" in 3rd grade, 1985, with my classmates and getting hooked. Yauch was the guy that pushed them away from the bratty, punk attitudes of the License to Ill days and to the Buddhist, socially conscious group they became in the 90s when they put on their Free Tibet festivals.

Anyway, I don't know if they were anyone else's favorite or even liked them, but I'm kind of down today and rarely am I affected at all by the celebrity deaths. I think it's in part because it's almost like another part of my youth is gone and this brings a greater realization that all things pass. Depressing, but here's to one of my favorite performers. R.I.P.

I see you nipped me on the news, but, yes, very sad. I know he has a kid under 10, too.

Not nipped, just putting it together with yours. I was 10 when License to Ill came out and as a white kid in northern alabama, it was really the first time I had heard of music like that. I absolutely loved it and still listen to it every now and then on my IPOD. They did a lot for that genre and he was a key peice to it.

Same here. The Beastie Boys were the first group that made me realize there was stuff out there I liked, but my parents didn't listen to (or approve of). Opened up a whole new world to me as an 8 year old. Check Your Head was/is my favorite and listened to that endlessly during high school and college, along with Paul's Botique and Ill Communication.

Totally caught me by surprise, I didn't know he was sick. I didn't really appreciate their music until well after their hey-day. May have just been too young, may just be a moron.

Check Your Head and Paul's Boutique are classics. They simply dominated the landscape in the late 80's/ early 90's. MCA was always my favorite as well. A sad week on this planet altogether.

Here's some of the best of MCA and the Beasties.

It's the Washington Times, not a surprise. Obama didn't say anything about Seau, either. Probably hates Samoans. Also, pretty harsh on Houston and Jackson. "Long time crack addict?" Damn, too harsh and I hated Houston.
