Had to google. Seems like a guy that’s rising well. But, with defense being Heupel’s big question mark - interesting choice to give the reins to a guy that’s never been a DC (if true). But I get the bright star angle. You probably couldn’t recruit an established star.

 

All things considered, I'll go with that gamble.

I don't think it's a terrible hire, but it's not winning any press conferences.

 

Why not the Tulsa DC? Pretty low on experience but seems like there’s potential.

 

I would rather take a DC that has been killing it in the group of five than a position coach at a power team, but I can see the argument for the other way around (particularly once you factor in recruiting).

 

For a program with a loud former player trying to get people to boycott while claiming racism, let's just say I prefer a diverse coaching staff for multiple reasons, image and recruiting being 2 of them. Just my opinion.
