Highly recommend (its available via home purchase now). Dark (DARK) comedy, solid drama, great flic. You hope that you get 1 memorable scene per good movie, and this one has several. Some are hilarious, others so painful as to be excruciating. 8/10 - some characters are slightly caricatured at points, and which keeps it from the 9/10 range, but not so much so as to greatly hinder the movie, overall. Great original story, and beautifully shot. If Frances McDormand doesn't win Best Actress, they need to shut the whole thing down. She's masterful in this role, and plays it perfectly. You'll play hell beating Woody Harrelson, at all, in any role, but this might be his best performance yet. This is no small feat, just in and of itself, but particularly for someone like me, who is old enough to remember his breakout role as Woody Boyd on Cheers. Sam Rockwell not only gives his best performance since Billy the Kid in The Green Mile, but easily tops it. Easily. Would be interested to hear the take of anyone who watched it.
Thanks for this recommendation. Of the nominees this year, I've only seen Get Out and The Shape of Water. I enjoyed both of those, but for very different reasons. This was filmed in Western NC iirc.
I've heard that Get Out is great, which is surprising to me, because the premise of the movie seemed so off-the-grid.
It is very good and deals with racial issues in a subtle and interesting way. And it is scary and funny at the same time, which is hard to do in a movie. One of my most enjoyable movie-going experiences.
