I did not realize that we have Jim Chaney working for us as an analyst. https://sports.yahoo.com/article/jim-chaney-working-tennessee-football-201033017.html
I changed to 7 when Nico left. If I had known we upgraded I would have gone up to 10. I did not expect the defense to fall off a cliff.
IIRC I assumed Nico would improve and that'd cover up some of our inevitable defensive regressions(although didnt expect the defense to be this bad). Aguilar probably matched my expectations for QB play and we still sucked. Oops
This is about where I am. I expected to beat OU and Vandy and lose to Florida, assuming modest QB improvement and modest defensive regression. We were about on that trajectory until the defense went from “gotten worse” to “completely inept” in the second halves against OU and Vandy.
Granted injuries happen and all that - I do have to wonder where we would have been if only 1 of Gibson/McCoy were injured instead of both but especially if both were healthy through the year. Who knows, if we end up with a net upgrade at DC and bring in a DB coach that can actually coach and/or at least recruit (where Martinez does neither apparently) it'll be worth the down season. Had they not gotten injured we almost definitely win the UGA game and likely bag OU. Being 1-loss likely changes the Vandy game as well. I was expecting to drop the Arkansas or Miss State games as well as Florida. I didn't expect those 3 to be as ass as they were. Overall though - I do think the situation we were put in by Nico and his dumbass dad overall was pretty remarkable that we ended up 8-4 and a breath away from going into the Vandy game 10-1.
My fear is that the corner injuries have given Banks a ready made excuse for his putrid defense. I’m not sure a healthy Gibson (and let’s be honest, Hood was here because McCoy was injured) does much to fix our inability to set the edge or fill gaps in the run or the all around awful safety play.
