Interesting wave in the blade. Is that some sort of Damascus?

 

I put furnace mortar on the blade when I heat treated it, it makes the bottom hard and the top soft. That makes it two different colors when I hand sand it.

 

Cool. What are you going to do for the handle?

 

Not 100% sure yet, I have a box of wood I've been collecting for a while, but some kind of burl, maybe Maple. I'm giving it to my wife's sister who I caught one time using one of my Henckel knives to open a can of beans. I guess I'll know pretty soon how tough my knives are.

 

Two kitchen knives, one for my wife, the Damascus, I bought the billet, and a stainless one I made for someone at work.

 

Seriously, what would you charge to make a knife?

They are ripping up some railroad tracks near the house, and have tossed some odd pieces, some about 3’ long or so near the road.
