I'm just going to chime in about how ridiculous it is for fans of a team that hasn't seen a bowl game since 2010 to call bowls participation trophies. Compared to where the Tennessee program has been, this actually is improvement. A bowl could allow for the first winning record this decade.
He's just saying they shouldn't exist. It isn't ridiculous to have such an opinion, as it is independent of how it affects a particular season or team.
I'd much rather play ND than against KSU/Texas/WVU. ND is built exactly like us, and I'm not sold on their defense. KSU will be just like the Mizzou game, Texas will out talent us and have a chip on their shoulder. We could beat WVU but we'd have to stop them, and I have no confidence that we could do that. Notre Dame could easily be lethargic, they would have absolutely nothing to play for. We could easily sneak up on them.
I'm glad Tennessee is going bowling. I do believe the fact that the amount of bowl games have almost tripled in 30 years has taken a shine off what being a "bowl team" actually means. When 78 of 120 teams get a bowl game, it's nowhere near a great accomplishment. It means you beat the teams on the schedule you should have beat.
