Good point. I also have thought my 4 subdivision idea through more thoroughly and realized there is no way to do that without screwing over some of the rivalries. Example: Alabama-Auburn-Tennessee-UGA would not work.

A while back I figured out a way to realign with 14 that you could play all traditional rivalries and go to a 6-2 model that was decently balanced. It was predicated on Tennessee/Bama/Georgia/Auburn being grouped together though.

No clue what I did with it though.

Personally, I wish we'd realign and go to a 9 game conference schedule.

Somehow I mistakenly clicked BS on this. I did not intend to do so.

You actually don't need that big a modification. Play each year:

    *3 teams from your subdivision
*one designated rival from each other subdivision (3 games)
*The entirety of one of the other subdivisions (on a rotating basis) (3 games)

Sticks you with a nine-game schedule, but it's imo far and away the best way to handle a move to 16

    That sounds pretty good, actually.

    SEC North:
    -Tennessee (Florida, Alabama, Missouri)
-Va Tech (South Carolina, Ms. St, Arkansas)
    -Kentucky (LSU, UGA, Ole Miss)
-Vanderbilt (NC State, Texas A&M, Auburn)

    SEC East:
-NC State (Vandy, Missouri, Ole Miss)
    -Georgia (Auburn, Kentucky, Arkansas)
-South Carolina (Alabama, Va Tech, Texas A&M)
    -Florida (Tennessee, LSU, Ms St)

    SEC Central:
    -Alabama (Tennessee, LSU, South Carolina)
    -Auburn (UGA, Texas A&M, Vandy)
-Mississippi St. (Florida, Va Tech, Arkansas)
-Ole Miss (Kentucky, Missouri, NC State)

    SEC West:
    -LSU (Florida, Alabama, Kentucky)
-Arkansas (UGA, Ms. St, Va Tech)
-Missouri (Tennessee, NC State, Ole Miss)
-Texas A&M (South Carolina, Auburn, Vandy)

Here is a mock up of the 4 pod system. You play 3 games in pod, 3 permanent cross-pod games (from each pod), and a rotation of the other teams.

    For example:

    Tennessee would play:

    Virginia Tech
    Kentucky
    Vanderbilt
    Florida
    Alabama
    Missouri
UGA (or South Carolina, or NC State)
Ole Miss (or Auburn, or Miss St)
Texas A&M (or LSU, or Arkansas)
    3 OOC Games

The best records in each pod are given a #1-4 ranking (based on records, head-to-head, or other tie breakers).

    1v4
    2v3

    Winners for the SEC championship.

I'm sure there are some issues with this but I wouldn't mind it. It seems relatively fair to everyone and keeps some valuable rivalries in place.

    Looks good to me.

The criticisms would be 9 SEC games making championship runs very difficult, and then squabbling about some of the cross-pod matchups (like "Missouri?!!?1?")

If other conferences went to 9 games as well, I don't see any problem, especially if other conferences adopt the same kind of system. I believe that only conference Champions should have a chance to win a National Championship.

I tried to make the permanent cross-pod games as even as possible. Some of the better teams had harder cross-pod games (LSU, UF, Tenn) and some of the worse teams have easier games (Ole Miss, NC St, Missouri).

A lot of changes would have to happen for anything like this to be possible. However, I fell like it would put emphasis on the regular season, as well as any post season that would exist. It would also result in some pretty damn good games.

I too agree that only conference champions should play for the NC.

Yes, that would address that criticism... For major conferences. But the Mountain Wests to Big Easts would have an even greater advantage.

Their champions would be eligible, but with far less difficulty than whoever was arising from the SEC, Big 10, Pac 12, etc.

If you are scared/complaining about playing a Big East or MW team, you shouldn't be in the playoff.

It will be the very similar to NCAA basketball. A team may not make it in (UT) but they are better than someone who wins their conference and does. But, that conference champion earned their way. It is the same concept.

I understand what you are saying, I just don't see any way around it (in the future). You are always going to have 3-4 conferences that have the majority of quality teams. However, you can't "demote" the other teams just because they aren't in a tough conference. If they win their conference, they should have a chance to play for a NC. No one should complain, if they can't win their conference.

Haha, you misunderstand. I'm not "scared" of those sort of teams. I don't want to see those teams take one of the precious spots of more deserving ones. In the NCAA tourney, there are plenty of at-large bids to give the better non-champs a chance.

With football, even conference champions could be denied a chance.

If they win their conference, I don't see how they are less deserving than someone who doesn't.

FWIW, I'm envisioning a time when there are 16-team superconferences. I'm not implying that the CUSA champ get a spot over a SEC runner up. 6-7 Superconferences with Champions. Maybe have a spot or two for wildcard, if need be.

EDIT: This is all hypothetical anyway. I doubt any of it ever really happens.

You would think that once one domino falls that the 16-team superconferences would form in pretty short order. Not sure what that first domino will be.

    Texas to Pac12.

Ok, because I have nothing better to do and enjoy coming up with hypothetical scenarios, I went ahead and constructed a 6 conference idea, with 16 teams in each. In addition, there are two non-qualifying conferences with the rest of the shit teams that will never win or have a chance to win a NC. The 6 AQ conferences will be in pod-like forms, with all having the same playoff format for champions. The 6 Champions and two Wildcard teams will then play in an 8-team playoff for a NC.

This doesn't include huge moves (like Texas to the PAC 12) but rather a "filling up" of the conference. It also doesn't take into account the prospect of television markets, etc... which I just don't have the knowledge or desire to research. So without further ado, Superconferences!!!.... unveil.

ACC- A relatively poor quality group, but in the end, a relatively good team will come out of it (FSU, Miami, Clemson, UNC).[table="width: 500"]

Big East/West - Easily the worst of the conferences. Just like today. It could allow a good team (Boise St., Notre Dame) to come out of it, or a run by an okay team (Cincy, SMU, USF).

Using this model, and the preseason rankings, a possible postseason 8-team playoff could look like this:

#1 USC vs. #8 LSU (Wildcard)--------------------#2 Alabama vs. #7 Oregon (Wildcard)

#4 Florida St. vs. #5 Michigan St.-----------------#3 Oklahoma vs. #6 Boise St.

    Alright, that was fun. Enjoy.
