He hurt his back in a car wreck a few years ago and Tennessee supposedly hasn't offered him help. Tennessee says they have, Webb says they haven't
Just read that. So he had a wreck, asked former players and school for help, and didn't get any? But Strange left it open that they did help some? Just odd. Also a weirdly written story.
Is it the obligation of the University to help him? Not at all. He should have finished his degree he was given for free.
The article reads like it is a guy trying to get back in the spotlight for a few minutes. I agree with him on the whole "universities profiting off of players" thing, but he seems to have a bigger issue with the university and/or ex-teammates not helping out "a VFL that is down on his luck". What type of help was he looking for? Monetary? Whatever the issue is, I hope his luck turns around. It was a damn shame to see his career cut short due to injury.
I've seen athletes flunked at UT. I'm sure some have gotten special treatment, but UT isn't a UNC situation (at least in the time I was around).
I thought he had come back and finished it. Sounds a lot like bitter that life got hard. That said, he probably is the best RB at UT in my lifetime. A shame what injuries did to him.
Assuming he asked several players for help, I can't believe that every one of them turned him down. My Chuck Webb memory was sitting in the end zone and watching him run right at me and score what would be the winning touchdown against Auburn in a pouring down rain in 1989.
Packers gave him a 900K contract and a 200K signing bonus and had to track him down to show up. It's hard to give a guy like that money.
Guy has been estranged from the program for a long time. I think Basilio was the first and only media member in Knoxville to interview him after like 20 years of silence.
It's been a strange situation. I think he also took quite a bit of money from an agent that was a total rat.
