I almost told them to take a hike at signups, but they were "recruited" by a former parent so I didn't.

Yeah I challenged all my boys from trying team sports to juijitsu. Wasn’t always easy but they finished a season or 90 days of training. There was no quitting because the first days were rough.
You don’t know your own character until you are knocked down and see if/how you respond.
I’ve been concerned for years about how kids nowadays and some parents look to bolt at the first sign of obstacles. Not a good precedent to set for their future imo,
My oldest on the spectrum woulda quit bjj day 1. He just laid there. Thought to watch but I wanted him to be able to try to defend himself if bullied and toughen him up a little. 3 months later he won a match.

I just remember as a kid, I was never pushed but always supported. How my parents and, (when in town), grandparents/great-grandparents/aunts/uncles all came to watch me win or lose. I was embarrassed (especially when they yelled) and secretly proud because they were there.

I tried to carry that forward as a parent/grandparent, whether it is sports, band, theater, dance, awards, etc. I have made damn near everything they have done. I say little but I am there.

My bro and sis didn’t play sports. I was just born wired too. And back then there was no playing just one. Football season to basketball then baseball and a little track.
Growing up it was hours and hours of shooting hoops till after dark or playing pickup games. Playing stickball with a tennis ball core. Of course soccer. Riding bikes got the quads built up. And nerf tackle.
I showed up for HS baseball tryouts in 9th grade having not played before, but hit about as well as anyone because my neighbor played college and threw 1000s of piches. Hitting that little tennis ball core with a broomstick made a baseball look like a melon.

Anyone that’s on TikTok, look up golfshopchris. It’s how I imagine Card as a coach.

Daughter officially on a 3 week shut down from dancing due to acute schmori's node in her back. Turns out that twisting yourself like a pretzel often does have consequences when you are young.

Well, considering we originally were afraid it was a stress fracture it was actually a sigh of relief in some ways, but I do appreciate it.

Well, we are a week into football. My son seems to measure up pretty well athletically against the kids that have been playing a while which kinda surprised me.

The number of kids that don’t show up to workouts and practice pisses me off and I’m not even a coach. Parents giving just stupid ass excuses.

I’d say your knowledge was pretty spot on. From what I gather, the previous coach and commissioner for the program basically destroyed it. The coach we have now is young, but I’m impressed by him. He’s basically trying to be a knock-off Coach Rosser. Things could definitely be better, but from everyone I’ve talked to things seem to be trending in the right direction.

that’s cool. Hope he likes heat. “Fall” practices when it’s 90+ degrees you will see more not show if it’s already happening.

Well, good to hear. I just hear grapevine stuff, but I'm at least half knowledgeable about what goes on in most of Knoxville.

Sooner or later we're going to have to join the YAC, so I try to stay up to speed.

Yeah, growing up that’s the way all my teams were. Hell, my dad was my coach every year in basketball and he’d make me run for being late when it was his fault.

I cannot abide players missing practice. If I were coach, that is a one way ticket to the end of the bench.

    My rule is this.

I realize that football isn't the end all be all for normal people. This is not me, but I accept it. Crap happens. Family stuff, kids got in trouble, etc. Tell me ahead of time. Through email, texting and Remind if you can't get in touch with me it's not my fault. I don't even care if the text was sent 2 minutes before practice and I don't see it until after it, just tell me. But if you miss for no reason? Not good. If you habitually miss. Not good either.
