there are not 4 conferences. we aren't finding the best, we are finding which of the favorites is left standing. if we were finding the best, Bama wouldn't get UT every year
At this point, I'm getting a little tired of crowning the best. Is there anything we can do to stop that from happening?
I'm not so sure they'd make more than the basketball tournament. I haven't researched how much they make on the tournament, but I'm pretty sure people watching the Final Four are fairly comparable to the college football playoffs. Plus, if not, the basketball tourney has the advantage of being more compact, the distinct attraction of the spector of early round upsets and mid-major runs, making it more unique. It would be a completely different dynamic in football. I'm not sure they could bring in more interest and money than they do now.
We’re getting the best match ups at the end of the regular season and conference championships already. If you want to debate that it would be more entertainment your way, have at it. But it’s the perfect playoff already, while still keeping the regular season exciting.
it is not a perfect playoff if it involves 4 teams, and often only 3 conference champions. perfect? what the [uck fay], words don't mean much anymore.
1. Give me entertainment. 2. I think conference title still means a lot with 8. Plus you can throw a bone to the right group of 5 and an at large or two. 3. Every year can be different but I can see an argument for #5 most years. #9 might be pissed but I don’t think the general public will care too much.
"deserving" is a retrospective or unprovable hypothetical concept for designing a "PLAYOFF." conference champions. if a conference is too weak to be considered, why is it in the BCS at all? why should those wins count for p5 teams? if you want a playoff, make a system where ANY bcs division team has a path at the start of Game 1 of a season. if they don't, it isn't really a playoff and there is no real champion
I am an outlier. I do think tournaments are more fun. So I say top 12. Top 4 get byes. That gives a significant advantage to those 4. But it allows for an upset run and a rogue Cinderella. No conference gets more than 3. Notre Dame gets no special treatment. Or do 8. 5 power conferences go to 16 with 4 divisions of 4. Conference championship is 2 rounds. 8 conf games and 10 game season. The FCS games are what disappears
As it now stands, the AA doesn’t make a dime off of football’s current post-season, and perhaps nothing off of football at all, so even $1 would be more than they now make. I’ve not looked up numbers, Un, but I’m pretty confident that the revenue for football television rights dwarfs the same paid for everything else, including the Tourney / Final Four.
This is the truth. I hated UCF’s goofily claiming a Natty two years ago, but the reality is that team had a puncher’s chance to be competitive with the big boys, and deserved that chance. Boise was slighted for years, I’m much the same way. The P5 conferences like to believe, and force others to agree, that there is no championship-caliber football available, beyond the confines of their conferences and teams, and that’s simply not entirely or always true. It’s not rigged for the P5....but it’s greatly, greatly, greatly weighted in their favor. By that logic, App State never beats Michigan, or dozens of upsets never happen each year, and despite seeing many smaller schools do it every year, both in football and other sports.
@Tenacious D, just be a hater. I agree with the NCAA on UCF being National Champions. https://www-al-com.cdn.ampproject.o...ts/2018/08/ncaa_recognizes_ucfs_national.html
in 1998, FSU had no more right to play in the title game than OSU. Tulane had a real argument, too. picking 4 teams doesn't change the arbitrary nature of it. the rules should be clear: undefeated teams are in over non-conference champions . whether expanding the field or not, every team ought to have that guarantee at the start of a season. UGA doesn't deserve two shots while a boise state or UCF gets none.
All you really need to do is fix the bolded. Oh, and the 98 Natty was decided by December. Nobody was beating the Vols.
man I hope Ga's only shot was the one when Kirby tried the fake punt vs bama. Please let that be the train they were supposed to get on. Need their promises to recruits to crumble. You will play for the SEC title multiple times and will play in the nfl. That's their sales pitch
This. No matter what happens, in whatever scenario you can conjure up, there will just about always be somebody who disputes that a given team is a “true” champion... whether it’s a 18-0 Alabama team or some upstart that just happened to have all the stars align for a season. Honestly, one of the greatest things about CFB (and a big reason why it will always be bigger than basketball, imo) is that there has always been that dispute about who the “real” champion is. The controversy has benefited CFB forever and the WORST thing that could happen would be to eliminate that off season squawking about what would happen if (for example) Alabama played UCF in a plus one neutral site game...
Agree. I could see going six (perhaps with a rule that to get a bye, you have to either be undefeated or be a conference champ, since that has been such a big talking point), because it's still a limited pool and it gives a sizable advantage to the teams that performed best over the course of the regular season. But I feel like if you go eight then Alabama and Clemson (and probably Georgia at this point) don't care if they lose two games because they're in anyways. You lose a lot of regular season drama at that point
