Who said I was going to be a parent?

I think you guys have told me a time or ten. Probably one of those times.

    Growing doesn't mean "will be."

Can you be growing into something that you never "will be?"

I definitely agree with story telling games being better solo. It's more immersive, but multiplayer definitely has more replayability.

    Yes.

    Example:

I tell my son he is growing into a fine man. And then he dies.

In such a scenario, he isn’t a man, and won’t be.

What's it like not having any friends?

But the assumption in your example is that your son WILL become fine man IF he doesn't die. The dying hasn't happened yet. You wouldn't tell your son he's growing into a fine man after he has already died. At that point, it would be untrue, both because he isn't a man and won't be, and because he's no longer growing at all.

You can't make the same assumption for my situation. For all you know, I'm a homosexual who has already made the decision to not adopt. Or maybe I'm infertile and have already made the decision not to adopt. Or maybe I'm just a normal, heterosexual guy who has already decided that he won't be having kids. In any of these situations, the determination has already been made. I cannot be growing into a terrible parent if it has already been determined that I will never be a parent.

You will be. End of story.

No, that is incorrect, again. There is no assumption, it is a statement of fact. The action is "growing."

The "into XYZ" is not an assumption, it's the destination. The destination doesn't have to be reached, or even reachable, for the action to still be occurring.

So you wouldn't look at someone funny if they told you that you were growing into a fine turtle?

I might one day be a turtle. I can't rule it out.

But if I ever am a turtle, I am proud that I'll be a fine one.
