Sweet, moving up quickly! Doing patrols on the places you've already been will help you level up until you can do the crucible and other strike missions.
You'll notice your armor can be upgraded (the green, blue, etc). You'll need some type of resource to do it (can't remember what it is) but you have to dismantle other armor to get it quickly.
Yeah. Dude I work with just told me about dismantle, going to do that on a bunch of useless weapons and armor sometime today. I'm not playing multiplayer until my guy leveled way up, if ever.
