I think they had a system for developing players for that system that would be harder for players today to accept. I.e., sitting for a year and often only really having a chance to start in your 4th or 5th year.
Wisconsin and Michigan State do alright with that model. You have to build around that with the talent pools that they draw from.
You've got to get guys that want degrees and you better have an S&C program that is top notch. The state of Wisconsin seems to be full of 6 ft 5 inch meatheads, so the lines are easy to fill.
And didn't Nebraska counties used to give a student a scholarship and then they would "walk-on" at Nebraska? And I believe that was eliminated?
I think it was a multi-level marketing scheme that was broken up by the FTC. Sure, you won’t make much money directly, but you recruit five people to Nebraska and each of those five people recruits five people and then each of those, and pretty soon you are getting commission on 600 people!
