maybe it's a madoff situation. the company exists. it has employees and presumably has customers. he got all that money from somewhere.

Auditor at work isn't sketchy at all. His quid pro quo is pretty clear on the back of his business card.

No more than tax people. If a private company wants a clean opinion somebody will give it to them.

A tax dept has never caused one of the Big 5 firms to close up shop.

Side Note - if you've never read The Smartest Guys in the Room, read it. Absolutely amazing what went on at Enron.

It’s not a universal truth, but folks that don’t do f’d up shit generally don’t have anything to fear from an audit...

You usually are going to owe when you get audited, regardless of how well you try and do things

True, but if its an honest oversight as opposed to willful malfeasance any auditor worth a hoot ought to recognize that. Folks who are intentionally trying to skirt their responsibility deserve what they get...

Read somewhere that Acosta had claimed the plea deal he gave Epstein cane from above his head. Seems pretty plausible given what we know.

Former Enron guys are still scattered all over Houston. Not the top guys obviously. But they had some very talented people working there.

a lot of those poor bastards had all of their 401k in company stock and lost everything. the company would shit on you if you didn't invest in the stock too.

Yeah some of the smartest guys in the room bailed - but not because they saw the sinking ship. They just got poached. Everyone pretty much got surprised. I work with a great gas trader that knew all those guys. He’s been in the business a long time. Got burned badly there.

yeah it wasn't the traders who were cooking the books though they were manipulating prices.

When physical and financial trading is collocated, it can cause some problems. BP had to liquidate it’s shop and rebuild for price manipulation a few years ago.

Dershowitz arguing his wealth worked against him is astonishing for its general shamelessness.
