Lunch Today

JQK and I got to have lunch with Coach Johnny Majors himself today. I've chit chatted with him before, but never just got to hear him talk.

Observations/highlights -

1. His mind is still sharp as a tack.
2. We got to hear him break down defending the wishbone and the quickkick
3. Andy Kelly made the right read against Notre Dame in 90, the CB just made a great play
4. Tony Dorsett was the greatest player he coached. Reggie White was #2.
5. Hearing a guy talk about Neyland, Wyatt and just the old football was amazing. He doesn't know Tennessee football, the guy is a football enecyclopedia
6. Hearing him yell "[dadgum]it" when his phone rang after he thought he turned it off was a highlight of my life.
7. the 1955 Florida cheerleaders were babes.
8. Re one former grad assistant of his - "Smart as shit. Works his ass off too."

Incredible time.

 

So jelly.

 

I'm not bitter, dammit.

 

You shouldn't be. It's not like he took Number 2 and walked through how they were instrumental in beating Bama in 82.

Or how they had broken down Norte Dame's special teams and the plan worked to perfection again against them.

 

I've always heard people talk about how he "holds court" and that's pretty much exactly what he did. I'm pretty sure we could still be there listening to him right now, and he'd still barely be scratching the surface of all the stuff he could talk about.

 

Also him talking about having to do the "danged TV show" at 7 am and how he would screw with John Ward was all-time

 

Suddenly my banana milkshake doesn't seem that big a deal.

 

I'm assuming this is the GA that gets like 3-4 hours of sleep on the regular?

I'd have loved to have heard his thought on #ddiapos

 

SAid he got there at 6am and left at midnight, and this was in...86 (I think).

Yeah, it was special. Maybe not meeting Johnny special, but it was fat guy nirvana.

 

Not going to lie, that's a solid runner-up. I love that place.

That Notre Dame game was my second Tennessee game to go see. We sat up high under the S. My third grade buddies claimed to be ND fans (they were the kind who also rooted for the Oakland A's and San Francisco 49ers) and gave me grief before and after that game. Dark memories of that game. The corner certainly made a great play.

 

I believe it was Rod Smith.

 

This is one of the best posts I've read on here.

Did he ask you if you boys were "up to no good?"

 

Its been 6 hours since we finished and I'm still sitting here just amazed I got to do that. I'm at heart a small town boy who grew up worshiping people like him like they were larger than life. I try not to make things like that be to big of a deal, but man, today was just awesome. There's no other way to describe it.

 

Sadly no. I did ask him if he still liked his glasses though.
