Maybe not litter, but I'd say most of the graffiti in Rome is from Italians. However, I was there just a month ago and didn't find either litter or graffiti to be very bad. Probably better than the average for a city that size.
The litter was horrible early on Saturday and Sunday mornings. They had it cleaned up by noon though. Maybe they cleaned up the graffiti since last year, but, for instance those walls along the edges of the Tiber were just covered. Same with lots of the walls on the smaller streets near the Pantheon area. They may do like an annual cleanup or something. Somebody was explaining that most of the graffiti was sports related and not gang related.
i'd just call it a dump. the poverty level in the south of italy is staggering. felt like a 3rd world country at times. i went to tuscany and rome and then the south and the contrast was amazing.
Couple of photos of the interior out on the interwebs today. Looks like a lot of the main altar is basically undamaged. Tons of burnt wood all over the place, but the destruction looks minimal.
Survives 2 World Wars and catches fire in 2019 during repair. Just unbelievable. Though April 15th is a bad day in history
They’ll probably set up some sort of automatically descending barriers to cover any at risk paintings or frescos.
I know people's panties are in a wad, but I laughed. It's a terrible incident to a historical building, but its OK to laugh sometimes.
