I don’t see a valid reason this isn’t a good hire, he’s considered one of the best in the business.

No history with Heupel and his defense sounds heady. All kinds of ways it doesn’t work.

My instincts were that Walters was the better hire too but I know NOTHING.

James Franklin got shit canned because his offense sucked ass and the team quit on him

Walters is younger, you probably get more time with him than Knowles

Either the vols become a destination program in the next 5 years or it all gets blown up anyway.

That is what I was thinking.

I'm a tad worried about the boys grasping the complexities such that it does not inhibit them. I'm a tad worried about the fans having patience. <I use the term "worried" hyperbolically. Tbh, I'm too old to worry.>

And maybe Walters likes being in Washington state. And maybe Heuple wanted an old head to be the HC of the defense. But as previously stated, I agree that "... I know NOTHING."

Banks wasn't considered a hot shot. He was always a bit of a head scratcher but with a newish HC and program a dumpster fire we probably had few better options. Thankfully, things are different now

Seems like we had a hilarious list of people say “no” before we landed on Banks. Wish I could remember, but it seems like he was well down the list of candidates.

I can't remember if he was told no a bunch or just settled on Banks quietly

I didn’t like the Banks hire. Big 10 had 2 decent teams for most part and the spread offenses weren’t as advanced. He was bend but don’t break up there kinda like a lot of midseason nfl then buckle down in the red zone and hold the opponent to a fg.
I will have to see if our players are more confused next year. They were on their heels confused presnap and guessing all year, overthinking, which means slow and worse angles. Some say this defense is more complicated but will need to see. I have a feeling it’s going to look more like a Smart defense against Bama last week where we send 5, man under with safety help where we expect them to look. Banks asked his defenders to not only do too much, but do things they weren’t good at..dropping DEs and DTs into coverage which worked .1% of the time or showing zero and letting offense line up a slot on a safety with no help, or turning their backs on the qb at the snap to sprint backwards looking like a player started going the wrong way on the old Electric football game.
Our lbs and safeties may actually have fewer reads.
PSU was around 35 in defense last year with a putrid offense. We are in the playoffs this year with the 35th ranked defense.
My concern is safeties are big in this scheme. Who’s coaching them and we are low on numbers for 2 safety look, much less 3.

Sounds like the need to portal for experienced smart defensive players just increased if his schemes are so complex.

maybe but what if 3 safeties have less grass to cover and can play more free. Each player still just has one job on each call. Hopefully overall more complex for the O to figure out.

It's an upgrade. He's a competent DC. Has he had a talent edge at Penn State and Ohio State that he won't have at Tennessee over the SEC though?

He had good defenses at Analingus U and Oklahoma State too. The guy hasn't just lived on talent. They will have to get some DB help in the portal

Again, I know very little about different coaches and their experience/success at previous stops, so I'll give the guy a chance and just form my opinion based on how we look on the field.

That said, a couple things that jump out at me from Twitter (not even actively looking for it - the algorithm just fed it to me):
    • A fair amount of fans from previous stops saying negative things about him. Of course, I think most fans are [pretty gosh darned dumb], but it's a bit concerning, nonetheless, to see the volume of negative comments.

    • This continued notion that his defense is "complicated" and that it will take "multiple years" to install. First of all, that's just a weird thing to say in general. Three years to install a defense? The [uck fay]? Guys just aren't around long enough for something like that anymore, and the fact that I keep seeing it in multiple places from a lot of different people makes it seem like it's just something someone said on TV or in an article at some point, and now people are parroting it. It reads like the type of excuse someone makes after supporting a coach on a message board for 3 years and then he gets canned. "His defense is complex! He only failed because he didn't have enough time to fully install it!"

I also think him not being known as a recruiter is greatly mitigated by the existence of the portal. Being a mediocre or nonfactor in recruiting 10 years ago is not very relevant now that there is open compensation and more freedom of movement.
