One of my pet peeves is people misapplying the word "ironic" to mean basically anything odd or coincidental.

I must admit that I very much like a phrase Tenny introduced to me: nautical metric shit ton.

I use it often with a footnote crediting Tenny, of course, and often followed by my own addition from My Cousin Vinny, "It's an industry term".

    On words I hate:

Critical- should be self explanatory why I despise this word.

This was the exact definition I was given by my high school English teacher when I said I was confused by it. She then brought in her Alanis Morrisette cd the next day to clear up my confusion. She was a bit stumped when I asked her how I could use this information to understand wtf Shakespeare was saying.

These I believe are upper East Tennessee jewels of mispronunciation: "hit" for "it", "cain't" for "can't", "Ohiah" for "Ohio", "Ioway" for "Iowa", "mal" for "maul" and "feesh" for "fish". Plus miny more.

Words my grandfather used: Pizen = poison, 'baccer = tobacco, a'fixin' = getting ready to do something, pert'ner = pretty near/almost. There are hundreds, some I use in casual conversation still. Last one for now, I never heard my grandfather say a single curse word. Not one. He did generously use the word, thunderation, for the very few times I saw him mad/frustrated. Will post more later.
