Why do you think he should have been prosecuted, GCB?

 

You’re being silly.

You have no right to see the evidence.

He can't be prosecuted for this, but in essence he committed a crime against the marginalized. By falsely claiming to be the victim of a hate-based crime he has made it more difficult for true victims to come forward or be believed if/when they do. This is what pisses me off. His entirely selfish act will have rippling effects on actual victims of hate-based attacks. It's despicable. It's also a colossal slap in the face to folks who have been victimized, many of whom never stepped forward for reasons he just bolstered.

If he were to actually suffer consequences I think it might mitigate the damage to an extent, but now folks likely to question future claims will have more ammunition—"these people can make stuff up without fear of repercussions." And, you know, they wouldn't be entirely in the wrong for thinking so.

 

I'm glad people didn't use this dude as an excuse to call Trump supporters pieces of shit and racists

And which, ultimately, only lends significant credence to his claims that the attack actually occurred.

I understand this. Presumption of innocence, the system cleared all charges, etc. Still, I do not believe he is a victim nor innocent. And he is walking away from this damaged, as he should. Unfortunately he's likely to leave a lot of damage to others in his wake.
