Saw earlier this week where Marie Fredriksson, vocalist in Roxette, passed away earlier this week. You couldn't hide from those two's music back around '89 to '91.

He and I spent many an hour together as I drove the back roads of Tennessee in my job as a traveling salesman.

Yeah, seems like “nappy headed hoes” was kinda the last we heard from him in the mainstream.

Listening to "Time Stand Still" on repeat

I turn my back to the wind
    To catch my breath,
    Before I start off again
    Driven on,
    Without a moment to spend
    To pass an evening
With a drink and a friend
I let my skin get too thin
    I'd like to pause,
    No matter what I pretend
    Like some pilgrim
    Who learns to transcend
    Learns to live
As if each step was the end
    Time stand still
    I'm not looking back
But I want to look around me now
    Time stands still
    See more of the people
And the places that surround me now
    Time stands still
    Freeze this moment
    A little bit longer
    Make each sensation
    A little bit stronger
    Experience slips away
    Experience slips away
    Time stands still
I turn my face to the sun
    Close my eyes,
    Let my defenses down
    All those wounds
    That I can't get unwound
I let my past go too fast
    No time to pause
If I could slow it all down
    Like some captain,
    Whose ship runs aground
I can wait until the tide comes around
    Time stand still
    I'm not looking back
But I want to look around me now
    Time stands still
    See more of the people
And the places that surround me now
    Freeze this moment
    A little bit longer
    Make each sensation
    A little bit stronger
    Make each impression
    A little bit stronger
    Freeze this motion
    A little bit longer
    The innocence slips away
    The innocence slips away
    Time stands still
    Time stands still
    I'm not looking back
But I want to look around me now
    See more of the people
And the places that surround me now
    Time stands still
    Summer's going fast
    Nights growing colder
    Children growing up
    Old friends growing older
    Freeze this moment
    A little bit longer
    Make each sensation
    A little bit stronger
    Experience slips away
    Experience slips away
    The innocence slips away

I’m ambivalent on Rush and didn’t know who this was when I heard of his passing. But I heard an interview with him the other day, and was surprised at how obviously intelligent and soft spoken he was. He talked about growing up with two white-collar and quite conservative Canadian parents, and despite desperately wanting the same for him, still supported his dream to be a musician. When he was a young kid, maybe 10-12 or so, his Dad fronted him the money for his first kit, but only after he agreed to pay him back at $34 a month and which he’d earn by doing odd jobs for the neighbors. It was only after he had repaid the debt that his Dad would believe him serious enough to begin paying for his drum lessons. Later, as a young adult and mightily struggling to get started as a musician in Canada (Toronto, maybe?), he asked his Dad to front his moving to London, and where he believed he’d have a better opportunity to make it. His Dad gave him three months to raise as much cash as he could, and that’d he’d match it. He remembered how feverishly he worked to make each of those payments on his kit and later for those three months, and basically. He talked about only later realizing that his dad was looking out for him, both by teaching him to do the work the dream required, and how important it was to feel supported by his parents throughout, even knowing that the path he chosen wasn’t one which they preferred.

I know nothing of him / Rush / their music, but he struck me as being an incredibly genuine and good person.

I have never cared for Rush but that's just due to not liking the lead singer. He was an unreal drummer
