The overacting is partly part of the character at some point, imo. Of course, that is why I can tolerate Capt. Janeway. You see it as terrible acting, I see it as an aspect of her personality.

no personality whatsoever is part of her character? seems like a bad choice for a tv show.

In a way, yes. The background of her character that the producers and writers told Mulgrew was that she actually was neurotic and a little crazy, and not really fit for command. Seriously. Later, a novelized portion of the unaired backstory shows that she was forced to make some kind of choice between saving her father and her lover, and she was paralyzed with indecision resulting in both of their deaths. The only reason she wasn't washed out of star fleet with a case of the coo coo crazies was because of her family's history in star fleet.

Interesting. I guess that fits with her breaking every star fleet rule in the book in the final episode.

    Yeah, that's rocky mountain high.

I was perusing my mom's closets the other day and found an old Star Trek: The Game I purchased some time ago.

She's really breaking rules throughout the show, if you think about it. I'm not even sure her decisions that ultimately led to them being stranded weren't clouded and warped by her craziness. You'd think they could have somehow used the device and still had it be destroyed.
