Maybe, but the way this has all played out pretty much confirmed the UK needed the EU more than the other way around.

how so? i don't agree with that at all.

The negotiations with the EU made that obvious. They clearly never had anywhere near the leverage they thought they would. That’s why they have this “deal” that their entire country hates and are basically going to have to do a softer Brexit or get forced out without a deal.

i don't see how that confirms the EU doesn't need them. i see little evidence the UK is better off with the EU while the EU relies on the UK to fund all the socialist countries. the EU couldn't bow to their wishes or they'd have germany follow immediately and ask for the same demands.

Germany knows they're better off leading the collective than working independently. Otherwise, they, and the other European countries, wouldn't have bothered to bail out Greece.

Don't get me wrong, the UK leaving would hurt the EU. It's just going to hurt themselves more. While the EU would love for the UK to stay, they know they have the leverage.

The UK won’t be the last to leave.

Germany is in a tough place. No Euro and their exports within Europe plummet based on currency strength. That normalizes over time as the mark weakens on a damaged German economy and then things proceed from there but these things aren’t seamless.

Surely Germany has some people who are really smart and very good with money to help them navigate these dangerous economic times.

Yeah - they’re trying to hold the EU together.

I guess they could have simply been satisfied with keeping it as a largely economic affiliation, and not as a vehicle for widespread social change, instead. Crazy, right?

Boris Johnson is going to move things along at a more certain pace, were I to wager a guess. Certainly, it’ll damned sure be a more expeditious one, if nothing else.

Once the UK and it’s economy pulls out, and the next little hiccup occurs, it’s all going to sink, but not before it takes a bunch of economies with it, you know that, right? Speaking of which, have you been watching Italy? Strange and interesting times, all around.

They’ve got Corbin, Merkel and Macron - I’m sure that gaggle of super-smart people will get this all sorted out. It’s exactly complicated times such as these that we should be thankful for having such smart people in charge, tbh.

Now, if only someone could bring some much-needed clarity to the issue.

Sometimes I wish I could live in a smaller piece of the United States, where if I didn't like the way a group of people wanted to run their small piece, I could move to a different small piece of the US so I could live around people that have close to the same values and beliefs as me. We could have our own government in this small piece of the US, and make up our own rules, within reason.

Yeah, well there are those who will never be happy until you pay homage to their beliefs and accept them as your own by whatever means available.

Everybody feels that way, and it’s normal, KMF. More people should just admit it.

Damn almighty do I hate how their stupid asses just can’t see - won’t see - the forest for the trees, and more often than not. But I’d say that I’ve missed more than a few, myself, as it’s both entirely too easy and comfortable to do.

But that’s not how it works, brother, and shouldn’t be. Can’t be, really, because we’d fall.
And we can’t fall, because all would truly be lost, then. Anyone who thinks, believes, says or argues otherwise is a [dadgum]ed dangerous fool, and is not to be taken seriously.

We’re all in this together, and need one another. Need, not want. It’s hard and messy and maddening, for damned sure, but it keeps our bar high, our crazy down, our hopes up and the world moving forward.

I’m sure I’ll stop believing this, and in it, probably within the next several posts. But I’ve learned to appreciate the moments when I can hold onto it, however fitfully and fleeting.

They bailed out Greece because their banks owned billions of Greek debt and Greece defaulting would have bankrupted a lot of banks.

Why would the German economy get damaged?

  19. tvolsfan

The same reason the UK economy is about to be damaged.

Do you really think that countries like Germany and France (and the U.K.) get no benefit from EU membership? It’s so simplistic to think the only thing to consider is money paid in vs money received.
