The people in charge don't have to apologize for themselves, but they represent the university as an entity and that entity may have some unresolved issues to atone, or whatever. I don't know the specifics of USC, but I know that South Carolina, as a state, has been steeped in Lost Cause and segregationist veneration for a long time. For example, Clemson still has a John Calhoun College and a (Ben) Timmons Hall, two giant **** yous to any black student on campus.
