pass rush isn't what shuts down leach. well coached good tackling teams who aren't out of position shut him down. look at who shut him down over the prior couple of years:

    peterson, wilcox, whittingham, dantonio

those aren't programs with sec dlines (maybe outside of utah), but they are programs that are well coached and don't miss tackles.

MSU wanted a coach with a hard edge that knows how to discipline. What better pick than a guy that got fired for going overboard on discipline.

The best he could do with a future #1 draft pick QB in the SEC previously was 7-5, and that was when the only teams that mattered in the SEC were Tennessee and Florida.

A lot of that was outside of his hands though.

Hal Mumme didn't even try on the defensive side of the ball at all and basically had a high school coach running his defense in the SEC

When has Leach ever tried on defense? The one DC he had who was successful with him left immediately as soon as he got a decent offer.

He at least gives it lip service, which is way more than Mumme.

Mumme didn't even care if he lost, if he put up good passing numbers.

Fromm was very good and could throw every route. I don't think talent was why they were so awful last year.

We'll see, but he doesn't look like a clear upgrade to me. More interceptions than Guarantano. Really struggled at times.

For the second half of the season he was throwing sub-50% in most games.

No, they didn't. They got a guy that fits nothing they do on offense

Mainly because they don’t do anything on offense.

They let Field go because he did not fit their offense; how is Newman any better?
