Was reading something on the Texan revolution the other day, and it was discussed how exasperated Mexico was with illegal American immigrants pouring into Tejas despite new laws forbidding any further immigration, them refusing to learn Spanish, etc. Was very ironic. But apparently part of the reason they forbade further immigration by Anglos was because the Anglos weren't settling further West where they hoped they would, to serve as a buffer for Comanche and Apache raiders who were harassing Sonora. Fast-forward a decade later or so during the US-Mexican War, and when the US army was invading northwestern Mexico, they encountered no resistance from the locals who were still being constantly harassed by Comanches and Apaches, and frankly were relieved to have an occupying force come in and accidentally provide some relief. I only mention this because one of the sources for this was the diary of Josiah Gregg, from Overton County, TN. That whole chapter of American history is crawling with Tennesseans.
