To meet the original orders they had to scale. You have to start somewhere and ramp up. We're pretending they instantly scaled to hit the original doses and then instantly scaled to hit new doses. It's one big curve.

South America and Africa are largely afterthoughts at the moment. They need doses too.

AstraZeneca was moving toward Africa, until the South African variant, now they are looking at a mix of Johnson and Johnson, and China's vaccine. Brazil was looking at China's vaccine.

Johnson & Johnson I don't think is better than AstraZeneca.

Those countries are poor, and are going for the cheaper options.

What was their limiting factor in their production line that has been overcome that has allowed them to increase production?

I'm not sure AstraZeneca is going to get FDA approval.

Johnson & Johnson might, but it'll be close.

But that's 300 million or so doses we'll have to replace in AstraZeneca, and we'll probably look to Pfizer, further increasing demand.

also, Pfizer's cold storage requirements would be daunting in those places.

Yup. That is where Johnson & Johnson has an edge in poorer countries, given it can be stored at normal refrigeration. That and only requiring one shot.

Yeah this is well known. That was well before the clinical trials were final and they were concerned about the refrigeration problem and were focusing on the jnj vaccine. We are talking about June of last year. Obviously a mistake is retrospect, but to frame it as turning down more doses of a known viable vaccine is false.

where are we talking about june of last year? how is it framing it to report what occurred in December/november, falsely?

it’s right in the article. Of course buried in it which makes it misleading. Wonder why they did that?

But this summer, the White House opted not to lock in an additional 100 million doses for delivery in the second quarter of 2021, according to people who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss it publicly.

    More from the article:

Dr. Moncef Slaoui, who is leading the government’s vaccine effort, noted the Trump administration was looking at a number of different vaccines during the summer. He told ABC’s “Good Morning America” on Tuesday that “no one reasonably would buy more from any one of those vaccines because we didn’t know which one would work and which one would be better than the other.”

this article makes it clear that this offer was continued to be declined into November:

    https://www.cnbc.com/2020/12/14/cov...s-in-november-says-board-member-gottlieb.html

to frame this like all events took place in june is false.

you mean until the clinical trial data was available? Trump was supposed to know which vaccine worked best?

The media is reporting trump turned down a viable vaccine. Biden simply just asked for more and got it and people really think there is no media bias.

Clinical trials were concluded in early November. The trials were monitored, as all trials are.

which is right when we stopped turning down the option. How is this a story?

Trump didn't make an additional purchase order until near the end of December. If the argument, of yours, is that they were waiting until trial data (for phase 3, data for 1 and 2 were concluded, already), then the timing doesn't work. It was fully a month plus after, and after FDA approval for use.

It also wasn't until after this story, that the purchase came in. Odd.
