Since Verne seems to think that the Tennessee Waltz is our Alma Mater....feel free to throw out other Verneisms. Like our new kicker....Alvin Medley
Verne: "NO - FLAG - ON - THE - FIELD....TOUCHDOWN!!" Gary: "yeah, there is...there's a flag on the field down at the 40 yard line...it's coming back" Verne: "Ah, yes, you are correct"
I think Verne gets told kindly that he is done after this year. He can't even see what's going on anymore.
I love Verne. It's like watching football with an 80 year old man. After 15 years, I've learned to tolerate it.
2004 TN-Florida Game Gary: Tennessee is going to get an Unsportmanlike for being on the field. Verne: Yes they are!
Verne has an old man grunt he breaks out 3 or 4 times a game that cracks me up. I'm thinking he falls asleep
Not at all. He said Tennessee was way conservative in the losses. I took that as jab at the coaching and its play calling.
It does not matter what Verne ever did beyond the Duke-Kentucky game. He was part of a lore that ranks up there with Al Michaels call in 1980 or Don Criqui in the 83 Orange Bowl that has defined their career by a single game. "There's the pass to Laettner...puts it up. YES!!! "
You have to admit, listening to a game he calls and listening for gaffs is fun. Plus you get to sit around and use your best Verne voice.
