If my grandfather were still alive, I'd bet my next paycheck he wouldn't recognize asparagus on a plate in front of him. The man never ate anything other than pinto beans/cornbread, eggs/bacon, chicken, and sandwiches.
Pinto beans, cornbread and catsup was once a week when i was little. Maybe the ketchup was just me. I couldnt stand the feel of creamy beans but we ate it or sat there all night. That pan cornbread though. Nobody around here makes it like country people do.
And apparently nobody else crumbles cornbread into a bowl of milk either. One of my grandfather's favorite foods, as well as mine. My greatest shame was when my wife, who is Eastern Tn born and bred, made cornbread with sugar, cream corn and in a glass pan. That there is Yankee cornbread.
My grandfather poured a glass of buttermilk and put the glass in an old pie pan. Then he crumbled a slice of cornbread into the buttermilk. After he was done, he'd pour anything that spilled into the pie pan back into his glass and finish it.
Food: Cornbread. Movie: Tombstone. Band: Alabama. 2nd favorite food : Longhorn straight. Car: ‘85 Toyota pickup*. Book: Tell you the truth Bob I ain’t got much time for books, but I’d say Lonesome Dove. *If you think a Toyota ain’t peak redneck drive up in the hills and feast your eyes on all of the 1980-1985 straight axle flatbed Toyota’s spray painted camo with bald mud boggers.
I can bake the hell out of a pone. Served with: Pinto beans Or White beans Or Homemade vegetable soup It’s also a matter of personal pride that my girls wake me up every Saturday begging for biscuits and gravy.
I love cornbread but I've never been a fan of it with beans. Good soup beans are best with plain white bread IMO.
Have never even tried it that way. I do prefer plain white bread with barbecue. Of course, I had corn bread with pretty much every meal and we didn’t really barbecue growing up (discovered the white bread later in life). I used to like to take deer meat and put it in between sliced cornbread and put a little A1 on it. Haven’t had deer more than a few times since moving away from home though.
