Here's a theory. Unless you get one of the best 5 players in a class, getting one and done players is bad for your program over the course of time.

 

You may add someone like Phillips who is marginally helpful for a season, but it would be better for the construction of your team and your culture to invest those scholarships in players who will be there 3 or 4 years.

I think Bill Self is a perfect example of this. He tried the one and done thing, and it didn’t really work for him. Josh Selby, Andrew Wiggins, Joel Embiid, Cliff Alexander , Kelly Oubre, Cheick Diallo, Josh Jackson. All of those guys were one and done, or guys who were thought to be one and done coming out of high school. Self never made a final four with any of them on the roster. His best teams have been with lower ranked five stars and four stars that he and his staff developed over the course of 3-4 years.

 

A lot of Kentucky fans seem convinced their incoming super class is going to bring them back next year. But among all the Elite Eight teams this year there was only one total true freshman starter. Freshmen don’t win titles anymore. Not even super freshmen.
