I imagine he had his case to look forward to doing, and now that it was done, he looked down the long, dark tunnel of life in prison (and most likely solitary confinement since he already killed someone in prison if I am not mistaken) and decided it wasn't worth the hassle. Obviously something wrong with the dude from a mental standpoint, and I just find the whole situation a sad tragedy.
I sort of see it. If I had no hope of release and was guilty of murder, what's the point? Is it better than racking up the cost of being a federal prisoner for 45 more years with no real life? And he went from being a wealthy, famous athlete to a convict. That'd be harder to deal with than someone who never knew what champagne tasted like or never had women throwing themselves at them... I guess. Or maybe not and he's a quitter.
