Rumor has it that Bates would jokingly try and tackle Herschel Walker anytime he got the ball during practice at Dallas. Herschel has been known to relay that anecdote and tell the story of a no pads non-contact practice where Walker was fielding kickoffs for the starting return team and Bates laid his ass out. I thought that was pretty funny. When both were in Dallas the first time they would routinely hold arm wrestling contests for charity.
