MPD using social media accounts to track people associated with BLM and other types of activism.

Facebook banned the accounts, told them to stop.

ACLU says it violates a consent they made in the ‘70s, when they were spying on civil rights activists.

    Yay, police state. 5-4.

Are they allowed to track terrorists? Not say BLM are terrorists.

So if police were using social media to track a group you didn't agree with it would be savvy policing?

    Asking for a friend.

I guess I need to know more, and better understand, what’s happening here.

When we’re saying that LE is “spying on BLM via social media”, do you mean that they are accessing publicly available info / posts, or something else and/or more?

    No.

    1. Facebook is a private company. No post on that site is public, even though you may see them.

    2. They created fake profiles and friended people to get to more information than they would have been able to without such a tactic.

    More:
Admittedly, reading that the police named their fake profile “Bob Smith” gave me a chuckle. Was, “Mr. WazzupKidz Iamtotallynotacop” already taken?

If they are the suspect of an investigation, they can get a warrant. Every judge will sign it.

So if an alt-right group is considering a rally in Memphis, the MPD still needs a warrant to track them?

Pretty low on my list of Memphis problems.

    Yes.

Klan. Anti-fa. Students for concealed carry on campus. Pro-Life about to do a sit in. Pro-Choice in front of a church.

    All of them.

Being fair, if this happening surprised you, you have to ask yourself if you aren't being a bit naive.

    Naive? No.

Shocked that it is simply accepted as common place by generally reasonable people? Daily, here.
