Most places, it doesn't provide money and that is where the resentment comes from. But it certainly does at UT and also boosts the reputation of a school in a broad way like nothing else can.
And the athletic department at UT has always given to the academic side. If I remember, wasn't part of the library paid by the athletic department? Been a long time since cannot remember.
The national exposure a successful athletics department provides is invaluable. The year I left Coastal we had just won the CWS. Talking to some of the old coworkers after I left, I learned that for the first time ever the university had to do a waitlist for admissions. For a baseball championship.
University of Denver would get bumps in applications off of rich kid sports I didn't know were even NCAA.
Tennessee should recognize UCF’s national championship in his bio. Didn’t Bama win the playoff that year?
The one thing I’ll say...it’s been a long time since things looked fun on the sidelines. Hopefully this AD will bring the program into this century....got a feeling he’s about to drop some serious scratch.
It was Andy Holt. "When he was president of the University of Tennessee in 1959-70, Andy Holt often referred to the Vols athletics program, and particularly its football program, as “the front porch of the university.”"
Whatever you do, don't name a dorm with a bunch of sweaty undergrads after him. Just tear that shit down right now.
