I disagree he necessarily was getting at this, but I also said that he worded in a way that it could be deduced in this manner. Basically, he allowed it to come down to interpretation of the listener instead of being clearer and that's dangerous for a person of his position.

Yes, which it is certainly possible that I've interpreted it incorrectly, too. And that fault lies with Obama not being clearer in what he meant. For such a strong statement, he left too much open to interpretation. Saying that there are a lot of hard working people who didn't make it suggests that people who are rich are also hard working, but saying you didn't get that business on your own can be seen as contradicting that idea. Like I said, I agree with the sentiment that no one gets anything on their own, but there's no doubt it takes elements of hard work and intelligence, along with risk, to become successful in this world (usually).

Out of curiosity, can anyone remember remember the last time the lot of American political candidates actually attempted to walk the public through policy and what needs to be done/can be done/will work or whatever without resorting to the same bs rhetoric? From Obama it's the rich hating, with Romney and any number of other people it's "we are against this president and the grievous extension of government yada yada yada," from other liberals it's "they don't care about the poor and they don't pay their fair share and you need health insurance and they don't want you to have it," from the conservatives it's Marxist this and socialist that.

It definitely is and would probably be a great thread for an epic debate, but I was just pointing out I'm not in favor of a Somalia-style govt, just one smaller than what we have now.

 

I think there is some truth to what he said. The operative word there is some. It was still stupid, framed poorly, and should have never come from the mouth of a man whose job it is to unite the country, work with both sides, and work for ALL of the American people in order to make life better for everyone.

Fair? beats me. Fair would be a flat tax. the question, IMO, is what type of tax rate incentivizes people to invest and work harder. I do think the current system is bordering on disincentivizing the rich to work more. notice i said bordering. if obama gets away with rasing the capital gain rates it's no longer bordering.

 

he's clearly not saying just some of the middle class is the same and just unlucky. it's another in his attempts to portray all the rich as a bunch of country club people with trust funds living like scrooge mcduck.

Obama makes a great argument for the poor to start paying taxes. You shouldn't be allowed to be the recipient of so much government generosity without paying for it.
