My main takeaway from it is we can fly all over the universe but for some reason still use ballistic weapons. Come on guys.

 

In reality, laser weapons are very problematic. Simple things like fog and smoke can render them useless.

Agreed. I get that movies cannot perfectly translate or depict a book, but in this case, the show just completely ignores critical elements of the story, and some of its best parts.
