Tedford is Terrible? Far from it. Lupoi is a huge loss to CAL both from a (DL) Coaching and Recruiting stand point. Go Bears! Shaw and 11-2 is an embarrassment...you are kidding right??? Agree about gm mgmt vs. OK ST. Everyone knows of/has seen the "Letter", Will Lyles' CSS "National Package" and the $25K. The NCAA's case rests on Lyles and whether or not he is believable, esp to a Grand Jury. Oregon has Defense Team led by Atty Mike Glazer (an exceptional talent who once worked for the NCAA and owns an impressive record vs. the NCAA). Let's see how it plays out.
Once again tedford has beaten one team with a winning conference record since 2007. Let that sink in. Name a good or average coach with a similar record? You have one of the best college qbs of our lifetime, 4 future STARTING nfl lineman, 3 future STARTING nfl TEs, and 5 or 6 future nfl players on defense (including 3 future first rounders) and you get run out of the building at home against oregon a team with none of these? What does lyles have to do with it? We know he gave him the $25K. We know he asked for NOTHING in return until the ncaa asked for the recruiting info lyle's got paid for and then lyles quickly gave him something 3 years old. We have the handwritten note from chip thanks lyles for "orchastrating everything." We know lyles was banging the recruits mom. We know the recruit told the ncaa that lyles was a strong mentor and helped him through the process. That's more than enough information to "convict" oregon. Hell it's 10X what the ncaa had on USC. All they had there was a picture of the RB Coach with bush and an agent. That's it.
Ted Tedford brought the CAL program out of obscurity---had them ranked as high as #2 in '07. He's accounted for 8 of 21 Bowl appearances---5 of the programs 10 Bowl victories and just one losing season ('10). Yes, '10 (5-7) and '11 (7-6) was a bit of a backslide and the with the degree of difficulty of schedule 2012 might end similar. Nevertheless, he raised the bar. He coached more games and is the winningest (in terms of overall victories) HC in CAL history. He has won 82 gms to date---the same amount that the five coaches prior to him 1983-2001 compiled. Ask yourself, who can the Univ attract that will make a bigger impact and be more successful? The most damning evidence is the $25K---The Univ, not CK, gave Lyles and CSS for (recruiting) services rendered. The "Letter" (in fact, there are 2---one from KC another from Tom Osourne ) is a handwritten Thank You note, no damning content. Recruits telling the NCAA that Lyles was a "strong mentor an helped him through the process" is at most damning of Lyles, and hearsay as well unless collaborated. As for Lyles bedding recruits family members, what does that have to do with CK or the Univ? Irrelevant. Case is mostly circumstantial and hearsay at this point. Nothing has been collaborated to the satisfaction of the NCAA. As I previously stated, let's see how it plays out.
Talk about loser mentality. So the guys before him were terrible and therefore we can't do any better? The likely 4-8 record this year is right about Tom Holmoe territory. So let's keep the man and basically leave nothing for the new coach. $300 mil in new facilities wont help i guess. Ask yourself whether 6-6 and going to a bowl while getting blown out by alll you major rivals and every good team is really oh so much worse than going 4-8 every year. Cal has one of the best recruiting bases in the country, now has some of the best facilities, and has a world class degree to offer. Cal has the 9th most players currently in the nfl. outside of mack brown, no coach in the country has done less with more than jeff tedford. No damning content?!!!! He specifically says "thanks for ochestrating everything" and then he's going to argue with a straight face that lyles didn't have anything to do with seastrunk's recruitment?
But josiah says it's not relavant? How about the fact that his mom also came out and said lyles never told her he was getting the $25k?
At least you didn't suck completely the 8 years before dooley got fired. Cal isn't a great program, but the program's winning % is still above .500 (above oregon BTW). We aren't Tenn, but we aren't rice either. One terrible coach before tedford and apparently that means we go back to 1-10 immediately if we fire the bastard. Also something that is misunderstood is that it wasn't till the early 90s that cal started lowering academic standards for athletes and it wasn't till then that the administration was anything but completely hostile to football. So in the 90s we had Synder (got us to a citrus bowl before leaving for ASU and taking them within one play of the NC), Gilbertson (a guy who ran both cal and UW into the ground, terrible coach), Mariuchi (only stayed for one year before going to the 49ers), and Tom Holmoe (promoted from mooch's staff despite having the worst ranked defense in the country). Despite all this cal still produced many nfl players: andre carter, deltha oneal, tony gonzalez to name a few. So Cal finally gets someone mediocre. He lucks into getting hte greatest qb in cal history and wins some games and now we are supposed to be grateful that he has us going to the emerald bowl and losing to wac teams. (sorry for the rant)
You’re a passionate fan. I appreciate and respect that. My responses are fact based. RE: CK. Again, CK saying “thanks for orchestrating everything” is too vague. There is no mention of the $25K or any type of “recruiting violations” and has the NCAA struggling with and trying to overcome.
I admire your passion but your argument is based more on emotion than fact. I, on the other hand do not have an emotional investment, my argument is fully supported by fact---not embellishment or taken out of context. CAL being above 500% thanks in large part to TT. See the stat below (or open the link), before TT you would need to go back to Mike White “72-’75 and “Pappy” Waldorf ’47-’56. TT has more victories than the last 5 coaches combined. Here's a good read, droski, (SIAR) ... Tosh Lupoi downplays controversial move from Cal to Washington | Husky Football | The Seattle Times
Well the said good coach is about two weeks away from getting his crappy ass fired so clearly those who watch the man coach disagree with you. So he sends him a note days after seastrunks visit to thank Lyles. How less vague do you want it? "Here's 25k for the commit."? There couldn't be a more damning note possible.
Lupio is a slimeball. Tedford should have paid to keep said slimeball. Another reason why he is a lousy coach. He hasn't had a single assistant leave for a promotion outside of lupio and Wilcox in 12 years. He runs every oc out of town and he never beats anyone with a winning record. The people before him might have lost more games on average, certainly not more than tedford recently, but at least the occasionally beat someone they shouldn't.
And I have no idea where you are getting your nfl numbers but they are just flat out wrong. Tedford inherited more nfl players from Holmoe than he produced until very recently. Before tedford we were in the top 10 in active nfl players. Unlike crapholes like Eugene and Corvallis the Bay Area actually produces tons of nfl players per year.
How? He could have sent the note the day of---it (timing) is irrelevant. The contents do speak to specifics---defense will say it's a simple "Thank You" note.
NFL Players by College - C - National Football League - ESPN As to Top 10 in active plyrs before TT...better double check that. Yes, I'm familiar w/ SF, a beautiful city, I lived there and in Marin Co.
I don't see how listing a bunch of bowls Tedford has coached in that almost no one cares about says that much about him. I mean, it's not really hard to make a bowl if you're in a BCS league. You almost have to try not to.
